Empowering youth and community engagement and improving lives through inclusive research
We work with young people and communities to inform policy and practice, supporting more inclusive and democratic societies. Our research is rooted in collaboration and real world engagement. We are a collaborative research group that has
significant local, national and international experience in engaging with and empowering children and young people in civic society.
Our work…
Our research grows out of close and sustained relations with specific communities, families,
practitioners, children and young people and our specific research interests focus on
- Empowering youth and community engagement and activism
- Inequalities, poverty, marginalisation, health and education
- Amplifying youth and community practices, subjectivities and ways of being via empirical community and participant-led methodologies, which prioritises the experiences and perspectives of those involved
- Young people Not in Employment, Education and Training (NEET)
- The Elective Home Educated (EHE) Community
- Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) communities
- Use of Ethnography, participatory and co-produced arts-based methods for engaging with communities and creating locally specific, as well as national and internationally relevant knowledge
- Working class, ex-industrial communities
- Youth subcultural practices, transitions and outcomes
- Street connectedness
- Justice, inclusion and equitable partnering
- Investing in long term partnerships with the community and valuing ‘relationship’ work
